NJN reports a financial relationship between Chris Christie and Michelle Brown

by: Rosi Efthim

Mon Aug 17, 2009 at 07:30:52 PM EDT

Updated by Jason Springer: Here is the video from the NJN report tonight:

NJN is reporting that while US Attorney, Chris Christie gave Michelle Brown a loan of $46,000, which she is scheduled to continue paying off at the rate of $499/month to Christie and wife Mary Pat, until 2017. The story is not on their website yet, but was reported in NJN's evening newscast.

At the time the loan was granted Brown was fourth in command at the office of the United States Attorney for New Jersey. She is now First Assistant US Attorney. To questions from NJN about the nature of the loan, Christie replied they were friends and he helped her out during a financial pinch.

But given the mileage Christie is positioning himself to get with an anti-corruption plan he proposes as the Republican candidate for Governor, the timing - coming conveniently right after the massive political corruption sweep in July. That's magical timing, the kind of advantageous happenstance that's a lot easier if you have a very close relationship with somebody still in a key position in your old office.

Christie says there's nothing improper in the loan.

Brown already pops up alongside Christie in settings that may be unacceptable in terms of the constraints of her job in the US Attorney's office, which requires top staffers to refrain from partisan settings, which Rep. Frank Pallone has asked the Justice Department to look into.

this is very strange (4.00 / 3)
Why would anyone get a mortgage from their boss?

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

Don't we all? (4.00 / 1)
Can you imagine having a professional relationship with your boss -- and your boss to you -- if you had what in the end is a $60,000 loan between you?

Oh, and between Mary Pat.  I wonder when she found out about ... the loan.

I can't imagine he asked her permission and she said, "Sure, honey!  I'm pleased as punch to bind my husband, you, until 2017 to this very attractive young blonde you spend all day every day with, more quality time than with me."

Christie early on had assigned Brown to do nothing but take care of Christie's legal needs, no prosecutorial work for the public for her.  She was devoted, professionally (cough), to Christie, alone.

why October 2007? (4.00 / 1)
there is a lot more to this.  Rove left the WH in late 2007 and spoke to Christie both before and after leaving the WH.

what happened to get Christie a few conversations with Rove about running for Governor if Rove never heard of him when he was nominated in 2001?  Rove's position is political and he had a huge hand in the USA firings.

What got Christie into Rove's good graces that got him off the list and discussions about higher office?

Who was busted for the first time in mid 2006 that had a huge impact on bribing Democratic officials in a corruption scandal?

Why wasn't money laundering and organ selling enough?  Why was Dwek given a 2nd chance - and on a highly partisan investigation?

Who investigated Dwek and handled his case?

this stinks to high hell.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

You're right (4.00 / 1)
I think we need a FOIA on the list of targets Dwek was assigned to offer bribes.

I can think of several Ocean County pols right off the top of my head that by public accounts would be suspected as game.

I wonder if the USA office could be compelled to show who was offered bait and didn't bite.  That could prove the sting was political fair.

I meant ... (0.00 / 0)
... politicALLY fair.

Will Christie get called back (4.00 / 2)
to finish his testimony in front of the House committee? He abruptly walked out before he was finished. He clearly lacks discipline and self control.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

Wondering (0.00 / 0)
Do you suppose the Obama administration has kept Marra and Brown in charge so long past inauguration to give them enough rope to hang themselves?

Or has anyone heard the Senate maneuvering has kept an Obama nominee on hold?  I think I read Fishman was nominated, or expected to be nominated.  What's the holdup?

Note to Rosi: (0.00 / 0)
The interview ends "if you know where to look."

I stumbled on a couple of facts previously unknown to me awhile back when I realized the correct spelling of her name is Michele and not Michelle.  It makes all the difference in finding certain  documents.

NJN Was Extremely Deferential To Christie... (0.00 / 0)
....rather than "sandbag" him, it looks like they did a private preinterview prepping him for the "exclusive".

Looks like they're cowed by the prospect that id he were to win that he might hold a grudge.

It's the JOB of the press to ask hard questions in live in the moment real settings; Christie can then say no comment for the moment, and I'll get back to you if he wasn't prepared to answer off the cuff.

But to collude with a guy running for governor so he can come up with a nice cover story/spin for having failed to disclose a financial transaction that he was SUPPOSED to disclose in his federal filings is beyond journalistic courtesy.

btw    Y'all might enjoy this little bit I threw at the politicker folks.
