DFA, way to go! This is extraordinarily impressive (0.00 / 0)
DFA really proves its mettle here!  How easy - and horrible - it would have been for DFA to say, look, we don't want to get involved in an intraparty battle, which to many of us would have been a tacit endorsement of Boss Ferriero's team.  It would have confirmed what some critics of DFA have said, that DFA is too much a shill for the party rather than being, say, a progressive organization that wants to move the party in a progressive direction.  But alas, DFA proves that wrong here and it's thrilling.  What a great moment.  Love ya DFA!

Some of us are always looking for good fight (0.00 / 0)
& Loretta is inspirational.

Is Wildes really running for the Senate? (1.50 / 2)
Many close to this race believe the only reason Wildes has the support of the BCDO is because Ferriero is prepared to offer Mayor Wildes the line for the 9th Congressional nomination next year in exchange for running against Weinberg.

Apparently Wildes is willing to spend his own campaign funds to defeat Weinberg which lessens the fundraising strain on Ferriero. It seems to be a marriage of convenience and mutual objectives.

Wildes wants to move up and Ferriero wants the senate seat held by a supporter.

In effect, if Wildes wins he'll serve a couple of months, and then challenge Rothman with the line in both Hudson and Bergen counties.

It is rare a congressional incumbent is dumped from the line.

The last time I recall such a scenario was in 1974 when the old 13th and 14th congressional districts were combined due to decrease in the state's population and two incumbents (Gallagher & Daniels) squared off in a June Primary.

Since then, Henry Helstoski was the incumbent in 1976 and was denied the line but won nevertheless in a disputed contest against then Assemblyman Byron Baer. Helstoski would go on to lose the 1976 General Election to Harold "Cap" Hollenbeck who would then lose the seat to Bob Torricelli in 1982 after further gerrymandering.

So the question remains, is Wildes running to serve in Trenton or is Wildes running to become a senator in an effort to bolster his resume and challenge Rothman in 2008?

Is the BCDO seeking to dump Rothman? If so, why?

Rothman is the county's most prolific vote getter who has a strong following with organization Democrats as well as progressives, liberals and other special interests of the Democratic Party (womens, unions, teachers, etc.).

What would be the reason to dump a five-term member of Congress now in the majority with a seat on the House Appropriations Committee? Finally, the Democrats control the House and Rothman has built some seniority on an important House committee.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Will Wildes take a pledge not to challenge Rothman in 2008?

Will Rothman endorse Weinberg and her ticket?

Unfortunately, it's crystal clear. (4.00 / 1)
The only reason Loretta Weinberg is now a State Senator and Valerie Vanieri Huttle is in the Assembly is because Congressman Rothman was the trustworthy individual who both Loretta and Ferriero trusted to oversee the two contested elections.  If it was not for Rothman's presence at these two elections (and when he was out of view, beleive me - things went to hell in a handbasket PDQ) to make sure those 5 ballots of my Tenafly County Committee members were counted (albeit a month later) and our duly elected County Committee members and councilmen were allowed to actually cast a ballot after being challenged at the Huttle vs Wildes election, neither Weinberg or Huttle would be in the NJ legsilature right now.  Ferriero would have seen to that.

And so, thanks to Congressman Rothman's upstanding conduct, integrity, and honesty, the right folks won the election and Ferriero did not get his way.  You might say, it was all Rothman's fault.  That is why I went right up to him after that last election - and believe you me, he looked pretty frazzled, and thanked him sincerely.

Congressman Rothman was the only thing standing in the way of Ferriero's steamroller election tactics.  If it comes down to it, we may need to defend Rothman next year from the petulant vindictive Party Boss who shall remain Joe Ferriero and his brand new bestest friend ever - Michael Wildes.  (It just never stops does it? - I'm exhausted now, and its only 2007).

I'd support Rothman in a heartbeat.

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.

Cerdit Where Credit is Due (4.00 / 1)
Rothman is an intelligent sane man.  He is politically literate and can read the handwriting on the wall.

Steve Rothman understands that, in the long run, being associated with the political thuggery of the BCDO machine would cost him his own career.

Bossism from either party, is a vestige of the twentieth century.

There's no more "fat of the land" to live off of.

.......now off to the Kickoff of a New Age in Bergen County Politics!!!

Crystal Clear? (0.00 / 0)
If I remember correctly, then-Assemblywoman Weinberg filed her lawsuit following the 2005 special convention because Congressman Rothman performed his duties and refused to count the votes of the "tenafly 5."  How then, does the Congressman become responsible for her ascent to the Senate?

Congressman Rothman was selected as a respected member of the House.  He performed his role judiciously.  I don't believe either side can fault him for that.

If he wasn't there (0.00 / 0)
I doubt those five ballots from Tenafly would even have been saved.  I think a lot more folks would have lost the ability to vote, like at Valerie Huttle's election - where I was challenged and so was the whole Teaneck delegation.  I saw what you folks do when Rothman isn't around to watch you.  You challenged MY COUNCILMAN, you guys challenged every one who stopped at the Tenafly table, you stopped every African American CC member who could possibly be in the Black Caucus (they endorsed Loretta and Valerie before the elections) when Rothman was tied up in the conference room.  I SAW it.

Don't tell me that simply because you were caught red-handed cheating that we should trust you next time.

What kind of stupid do you take us for?

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.

Wow...What a party! (4.00 / 2)
Just got back from the most incredible political event.  There were so many people there to support the Weinberg Johnson Huttle team, that it was difficult to move through the crowd. The room was packed to hear Jim Dean give a rousing, energetic speech of support for the grassroots movement this Campaign has begun.

It was amazing to me to have the HEAD of Democracy For America, here to support our commitment to re-electing the most progressive State Legislators we have ever had.
We needed to get the support of the real Bergen Democrats -the rank and file, the ground troops - so to speak - to really get this campaign off to a great start.  And that is exactly what I witnessed tonite.

I was so excited to see friends Rosi and Jeff and Lewis again come out to support this race.  We have lots of friends throughout the state.  This thing is way bigger than the 37th now.  It is about the whole meaning of Howard Dean's call to take our country back - voter by voter, town by town, district by district, county by county, and state by state.  Right now we are in a struggle to take back our towns and our county Democratic Organizations.  I will not back down, and cede the governing of my town, my county, my district, my state, my country to those who know only self-enrichment at the expense of families and hard working people.

There are those who shrug their shoulders and say "But what can you do?"  There was a term I remember well from my college psychology classes.  It was called "learned helplessness"  They used the term to describe what happens to a dog put into a cage with no escape when it is then painfully shocked.  At first it reacts and tries to get away from the cause of the pain, but after a while when it realizes there is nothing it can do, it just gives up.  I think a lot of voters have given up and have a learned helplessness from having seen too much corruption - they think - Why fight the power?.

I'll tell you why you should fight the power.  Because you can win.  Not always, but you can win.  Winning in itself - small victories at first - getting five votes counted here, demanding a reason for being challenged at the booth - gives you the tiny bit of hope you need to stand outside in the 20 degree whether wearing a sticker that says NO, waving a sign and pleading with every passerby to vote their conscience.  Those early victories give you the courage to overcome your fear of public speaking and demand they let you feel inside the boxes before the vote to prevent a stuffed ballot box and the confidence to demand they let you in the room for the final count.
When that next victory is won, that gives you the guts to go it alone - off the line - on purpose.  To make a Choice, a Decision not to play a game but to stand for something bigger than your self.  More important than monetary gain or power for power's sake.  Important in the lives of all the people that have been helped and will be helped by Loretta, Gordon and Valerie in the present and in the future.

I remember standing in the 15 degree bitter cold in New Hampshire the day of the Primary - holding a sign for Howard Dean.  On one side of me was a woman who reminded me of Erin Brokavich - she told me of fighting polluters back in her hometown and how they just didn't get it.  Politics and government were a game - or worse - a joke - to these polluters.  They didn't get it - that people's LIVES are at stake here.  I was reminded of that conversation tonite when Steven explained that to the Ferriero-crats - elections are games to them.  But Loretta, Valerie, and Gordon take their responsibility seriously because they care about us.  I agree with Steven completely.

When I was up in New Hampshire that cold day, on my other side was a college-age student from West Virginia where they were removing whole mountaintops to mine and were destroying the beautiful mountain streams and killing the fish by dumping the debris from the mountaintops into the valleys and poisoning the waterways.  She came to New Hampshire to stand in the cold not because someone paid her to, she was a volunteer as were many there, but because she was compelled to by conscience, by the hope that Howard Dean inspired that it was not just wishful thinking but that it was actually POSSIBLE to take back our government and return it to the people and maybe save her beautiful home from total desolation and destruction.

Do I care who Ferriero promised government positions and jobs to and that he needs to keep his promises to save face?  No.  Not really.

I am worrying about the elderly NJ residents in the senior care facilities, I worry about the parents of the autistic child, I care about the food that is being fed our babies - our parents and even our pets.  I care about you, and the neighbor down the street, and if my Dad has enough food at the pantry in Bergenfield to feed the families that come in that week.  I wonder about our kids over in Iraq and how they are treated here when they come home.  I am worrying about the state of our STATE.  I couldn't care less about Michael Wildes or Ken Zisa's FEELINGS for Pete's sake.  That is the problem with narcissim on the scale of Michael Wildes.  You are so busy looking in the mirror you forget about all the people you are responsible to.  All you can think of is your own sorry skin.

In the years I have known Loretta, Valerie and Gordon, they have never let me forget that they are HONORED to represent the people of the 37th District.  While Michael Wildes was making pictures to hang on his ego wall, Loretta, Valerie and Gordon were making policy that helps everyone who lives in the state - regardless of political affiliation.

I feel very well represented by my 37th District Team already in office.  They listen to those of us at the municipal level.  The system works.  So as Brenda the engineer would say - "If it ain't broke - don't fix it!"

Now the BCDO - that is another story.  I refuse to switch parties.  I will stay and fight and make sure that the words NJ and Democrat stop meaning "corrupt politician".  It starts here.  This is the shot across the bow of Joe Ferriero's ship.  It is going to get ugly.  It is going to get bitter.

This year, the 37th, next year, Bergen County, the year after NJ.  Ferriero comes across like a man who thinks women are only good for cooking and cleaning.  Well, get ready Joe - we're cleaning house.

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.

Video of Campaign Kickoff in 37th: Team Loretta Leads Off With a Home Run!!! (4.00 / 1)
(Cross Posted from Blip.TV)  (If it runs choppy; just click on the pause button and let it load for a while before clicking play again)

Thursday night was/is/will be a historic occasion in New Jersey politics.

The events that have lead to the campaign kickoff you're about to see are virtually unprecedented.

Essentially, three incumbent popular State Legislators have been unfairly/unjustly forced into a position where they have to run off the regular Bergen County Democrat Oganization "party line" to maintain their integrity as progressive Democrats.

The video speaks for it self.

You can sign up to help out at RealBergenDemocrats.com and I also suggest checking out BlueJersey.com as a way of keeping abreast of, and catching up with, developments in this race. If you search the archives there, you will find some great stuff and even be able to add your own insights/comments/questions to the mix.

A notable prescence at the rally was Jim Dean of Democracy For America. (A bit of synchronicity...this event occurred just a few blocks from Dean Street! ;-)

The positive fallout from Howard Dean's candidacy continues to shower us with political blessings.

Frankly, it's a no brainer. Loretta Weinberg, Valerie Vanieri-Huttle and Gordon Johnson deserve to be re-elected in a landslide.

The more you know about them and their candidacy (and who/what their opposition is all about) the more you'll want to support them in any/every way you can.

I left the musical bits in at the beginning and the end as they were/are a fitting frame for the Spirit of the the event.

There's nothing canned or slick about the following video, it's all one long "take". (Shot at 15fps with a hand held Casio pocketcam.)

A straight 43 minute "shot" of 100 proof unadulterated democracy...

Enjoy!!! :-)
