June Primaries Can Matter

by: Jeff Gardner

Mon Jun 02, 2008 at 12:12:22 PM EDT

You've no doubt taken Huntsu's Senate Primary Poll already. But what about the other races playing out in tomorrow's supposed-to-be-irrelevant June Primary? Here's a place to share your thoughts, comments and predictions about some of those other primaries happening tomorrow.

Congressional Primaries

Contested Democratic primaries in the 1st, 5th and 11th Congressional Districts, plus Republican primaries in the 3rd and 7th promise to provide more primary-night intrigue than I can lately remember.

On the Democratic side, there are some pretty strong favorites going in, though I think the results will be closer than expected in all three places. On the Republican side, I think that Kelly is going to pull it out in the 3rd, and (I hope I'm wrong) that Kate Whitman is going to steal home in the 7th.

Local Races

And, don't forget about the local races happening here, there and around, like the BCDO showdown with the Real Bergen Democrats, and even a hard-fought mayoral primary in Washington Township (yes, that Washington Township).

How do you think tomorrow will shape up down-ballot? And, tell us what other local races you have your eyes on.

Essex DFA endorsed Russo & Vorbach (0.00 / 0)
Bob Russo, former mayor of Montclair is running against Ralph Caputo, Freeholder/Assemblyman, in the 5th district. While Jerry Vorbach is running against Pat Sebold Freeholder at large.

Pat Sebold was instrumental in pushing thru the purchase of the Sequoia Advantage voting machines in Essex. Paying $8,000 for a 26 yr old design was just not fiscally prudent, and face it the damn machines can't even count right.

I find it just peachy that Jerry is primarying that B@@@@h.

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

The Essex races (0.00 / 0)
will be quite interesting, especially considering the whole voting machine affair.

But, I think the B@@@@h remark borders on troll territory. No need for that.

Elizabeth Mayor (0.00 / 0)
Christian Bollwage doesn't have a strong primary challenger  this time around, so the Battle of the Lawn Signs isn't very intense. The opposition,  centered in the Board of Ed & including the remnants of the old Tom Dunn machine managed to pick off a council seat a few years ago  but they're hardly  "reform" Democrats. (Tom Dunn was the Dem mayor who endorsed Ronald Reagan in 1984.)

NJ's 4th Largest City (0.00 / 0)
Elizabeth's Mayoral race got the full treatment in this diary last week.

Here's a trivia tidbit (and I'm punting here): with Newark, Jersey City and Paterson all having non-partisan municipal elections - Elizabeth is the largest partisan municipal election in New Jersey.

Jersey City doesn't count (4.00 / 1)
because we don't allow non-Democrats (as evidenced by the hiring of the Hudson GOP execs by the Democratic Mayor Jerry Healy of JC).

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

Schundler wasn't THAT long ago. (4.00 / 1)

Actually (0.00 / 0)
he was long enough ago not to matter.  He rode the perfect storm - a crowded special election after the former Mayor was led out of City Hall in handcuffs (for a non-related crime).  Since that time he's done...nothing.

The fact his name is still tossed around shows how irrelevant the GOP is in Hudson.  Of the nine freeholder slots, only two had any actual candidates in the primary - and they were unopposed.  In a straight up race between the Guttenberg Dems and the Hudson GOP, Guttenberg - which is only eleven blocks total - would have an easy victory.

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

In Elizabeth (0.00 / 0)
4th Ward councilman Carlos  Cendeno defeated a regular party incumbent in '06, but in that same primary election my 4rd ward  narrowly deposed Bob Jaspan,  a Dunn era leftover.

James Devine,  publisher of crap weekies, absurdly takes credit for the Joe Vas defeat,  but Vas  had managed to piss off a great number of Perth Amboy's  Hispanics. Devine himself was a contented  party regular loyalist until he had  falling out with the Union County Democrats & lost a lot of legal notice business  for his newspapers.  He wants that business back.

It's possible that Marty Marks can shock everyone (0.00 / 0)
and win the primary in the 7th.  Not betting on it, but rather, see it as possible given that he has positioned himself as the far-right candidate.  The Republican primary in this district once produced Mike Ferguson.

Should be interesting (0.00 / 0)
If he does pull it out, you'll definitely be in the running for best longshot prediction.
